Gravatar 2 Beta Frustrations
I’m slowly getting this site off the ground and am beginning to implement some plugins for wordpress. The list of plugins I’m using is variable and far from being cast in stone. I’m sure I’ll put together a post that details each of them once I’ve solidified my choices.
One plugin I’ve been wanting to use makes use of the Gravatar or “globally recognized avatar” service. New user sign-ups have been offline for a while. On February 12th, the Gravatar 2.0 beta site was launched and began allowing user sign-ups. I downloaded the gravatar2 plugin for wordpress, created my Gravatar account and was immediately unimpressed. It appears as thought the Gravatar service doesn’t currently work for new users. You can create an account, upload your images and that’s about all it seems to do. I have yet to get Gravatar to serve my avatar upon testing. In fact, I’m not the only one. The creator of Gravatar doesn’t seem to be very responsive to user comments and questions about the status of Gravatar. Personally, I think Gravatar is a great idea, hopefully it hasn’t fallen by the wayside or been abandoned.
In the mean time I’m going to give the MyAvatar plugin a try. It works similarly to Gravatar but uses the MyBlogLog service instead.
